Specialist Behaviour Modification

Helping you regain control of your reactive GSD or Malinois

If you are dreading your walks, avoiding other dogs, or feeling like you've failed your high-drive dog—we understand. Reactivity in German Shepherds and Malinois is rarely about "aggression." Usually, it's a nervous system that is overstimulated and doesn't know how to cope.

A Breed-Specific Approach

Adam specialises in working with these "misunderstood" dogs. We don't use force or quick fixes that just suppress the behaviour. Instead, we work on the root cause: your dog's arousal levels and their ability to process the world around them.

Your Dog Isn’t Broken. They’re Overwhelmed.

If you’re living with a reactive German Shepherd or Malinois, you know the feeling: the dread before every walk, the constant scanning for other dogs, and the exhaustion of trying to "control" a dog that seems to have lost its mind.

Most people see a barking, lunging dog and see "aggression." We see a nervous system in overdrive. These breeds are incredibly sensitive; they feel everything more intensely. When they haven't been taught how to process the world, they default to their genetics: high arousal, hyper-vigilance, and a "fight or flight" response that is hard-wired.

Adam Etchells working with a Belgian Malinois who is on lead sitting calmly looking up at home.

Breed-Aware Support from Someone Who Lives It

Adam specialises in the "tougher" cases. Having raised and lived with multiple GSDs and Malinois, he understands the unique intensity of these breeds. He doesn't just look at the behaviour (the barking and lunging); he looks at the reason behind it.

His approach is rooted in canine psychology and nervous system regulation. We don't use "quick fixes" or force that just suppresses the behaviour. We work on building a calm, confident dog from the inside out and helping you to better understand how your dog is experiencing the world around them.

The 6-Week Reactive Dog Reset

This isn't generic obedience training. This is a comprehensive behaviour modification programme designed specifically for high-drive breeds. Your Reactive Dog Reset includes:

We assess your dog’s triggers, their lifestyle, and their current arousal levels to create a bespoke roadmap.

Focused, hands-on coaching where we teach you how to be the leader your dog needs.

We teach your dog how to "downshift" from high arousal to calm focus.

Moving past triggers without reaction, whether it’s other dogs, people, or traffic.

Real-time troubleshooting between sessions. Send us a video of a walk, and we’ll give you feedback.

Our Research-Backed Approach

Why Traditional Training Often Fails These Breeds

Many GSDs and Malinois struggle with traditional "dominance" or "correction-based" training because their nervous systems are already too fragile. Adding more pressure often leads to "shut down" or increased anxiety.

We focus on:

  • Arousal Management: Keeping your dog below their "threshold" so they can actually learn.
  • Trigger Desensitisation: Changing how your dog feels about the world, not just how they act.
  • Handler Confidence: Giving you the skills to handle any situation without panic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at contact@thebalancedshepherd.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Most owners see a shift in their dog's focus within the first 2 weeks, but genuine behaviour change takes consistency over the full 6-week programme.

We are "Breed-Aware" trainers. We use what the dog in front of us needs, but our primary focus is always on building a calm nervous system and a trust-based relationship.

Yes! Once the foundations are set, we move our sessions into the real world where your dog’s triggers actually are.

We don't work with every dog owner who applies, and we don't take on every reactive dog. Here's why.

Our approach works best with owners who are ready to understand their dog's nervous system and commit to the changes that come with that understanding. We've found that when someone comes to us expecting quick fixes or traditional punishment-based training, we're usually not the right fit for each other.

That's not judgment on them. It's just honesty. We'd rather tell you upfront that we might not be the answer than take you on, waste your time and money, and fail to deliver.

When you apply, we review your situation carefully. We're looking at whether our approach matches what your dog actually needs. If we're not confident we can help, we'll tell you that. If we think you'd be better served by a different approach or a different trainer, we'll say so.

And if we think we can genuinely help? That's when we book the clarity call and start the real conversation.

If you're ready to take that first step towards a better understanding of your dog, fill in our form here, tell us your situation and let's have a chat.
