Building calm, confident foundations before the "big dog" problems start.
Bringing home a German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois is unlike raising any other breed. They are incredibly intelligent, highly sensitive, and have a "drive" that can quickly become overwhelming if not channeled correctly.
Most puppy classes focus on basic sits and stays. We focus on Life Skills for High-Drive Breeds. Our goal is to help you understand your puppy's unique needs and build a relationship where they look to you for guidance, even when the world gets exciting.
What We Cover:

1-to-1 Specialist Coaching
Tailored sessions in Darwen and across Lancashire.
Perfect for GSDs, Malinois, Dutch Herders.
Group Foundations
Small, controlled groups specifically for high-drive breeds.
Perfect for GSDs, Malinois, Dutch Herders, Border Collies, Spaniels and some Doodle mixes.
The Virtual Puppy Library
A dedicated online resource you can access 24/7.
Open to everyone - if our approach works for a Malinois, imagine what it could do for a Labrador.
Please reach us at contact@thebalancedshepherd.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We have no minimum age when it comes to training, though the vast majority of our pup intakes are at least 8 weeks old.
Of course you can! We offer in-home training, as well as remote support, so even if your pup isn't cleared for outside work, we can get to grips with many foundation skills.
While we specialise in GSDs and Malinois because we understand their unique intensity and intelligence, we do welcome other high-drive or working breeds if they are a good fit for our approach. If you have a dog that feels "a bit much" for a standard puppy class, you’re in the right place.
We've worked with many Border Collies, Spaniels and working line Labradors with great success in our group classes. If you're looking for a group class for your Frenchie or Mastiff, then we may not be the best fit.
Most standard classes focus on basic commands like 'sit' and 'down' in a room full of other dogs. While that has its place, high-drive puppies often become overstimulated in those environments. We focus on neutrality and nervous system regulation. We teach you how to build a dog that is focused on you, not the environment, which is the key to preventing reactivity later in life.
Not at all! In fact, this is the perfect time to intervene. What looks like "naughtiness" or "aggression" in a puppy is often just a lack of understanding or a nervous system that hasn't learned how to process triggers yet. We help you nip these behaviours in the bud before they become "hard-wired" adult habits.
Based in Darwen, we provide 1-to-1 puppy training mainly for German Shepherds and Malinois across Lancashire, including Blackburn, Chorley, Preston, and the Ribble Valley.
However, we do have an online library of puppy training resources you can access from anywhere in the world, so do get in touch to enquire about membership and we'll be happy to help.
